Who here thinks a catch can is a catch can? I’ll raise my hand. Matter of fact, I've raised my hand many times in my career of doing this. The fact is, there is an actual science behind these things we call a catch can. I mean, to the point where... should we even call it a catch can anymore?
I have a lot of customers ask me, "why do I need bearings, or new parts in general when we do our supercharger porting work?" The answer is simple.
I've really hesitated to write this one, a lot actually, knowing that others copy our designs and/or our methods. Maybe I should be thankful? Well, sure, I've been thankful for a long time. The fact that anyone is willing to listen to what I have to say, I always appreciate it. But now we are talking about the ins and outs of how we do what we do. So I guess, here we go...
Belts are made for wrapping. Not the Digital Underground rap from the past and not the Christmas gifts under your tree either! Rather, belts were made for wrapping around each drive pulley in the system. We are talking about how much surface area you are using around any given pulley at any given time. So what’s the most important pulley in the system? The crankshaft of course - the crankshaft pulley is the guy doing all the work. Without the crankshaft pulley you have no alternator, power steering, supercharger and whatever else you feel like driving off of a belt.
The uninitiated seem to think that a pump is a pump and all water pumps move water the same and they could not be more wrong. Every time I hear that I just roll my eyes. A water pump is so many other things and there is so much more to moving fluid. There are water pumps that are designed to remove water from a place and just move it to another place. Then there are pumps that are designed to move water while having pressure or load in front of them. These are key things to think about when you have a water system in a vehicle that contains a tank, heat exchanger, intercooler bricks, hose ends and about 30-40 feet of hose. The water pump choice is the most critical of the entire water system.
I would have to say my love of blower porting started over 10 years ago when the Corvette ZR1's LS9 was new and popular. There was not much about the LS9 (or it’s 2.3L blower) that we knew yet and the only upgrades available were your basic supercharger pulley (upper) and the blower snout from Lingenfelter (LPE). The LPE snout was (and still is) great - it showed me how you feed a blower and how you can improve what the blower can do by feeding it correctly.
